A collective of artists, scientists and philosophers gathered by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota at Théâtre de la Ville-Paris launches 18-XXI.
18-XXI is an invitation for a dialogue between generations.
A bridge between the 20th and the 21st century.
A bridge between cultures, arts, sciences, education and environment.
A bridge between places, cities, countries.
The 18-XXI Charter is an invitation to imagine and realize projects for young people of the 21st century.Learn more
⋮︎ FOR THE YOUTH OF THE 21ST CENTURY ⋮︎ 18-XXI takes as its starting point the symbolic entry into the age of majority of the first children born after the year 2000. This is an invitation to invent projects with young people, in dialogue with those generations born during the 20th century.
⋮︎ A WORLD THEATRE, PLACE OF HUMANITY ⋮︎ The 18-XXI Charter originated in a theatre, a place of memory and transmission. It encourages everyone to echo the languages, imaginations and cultures of all. To sound the universal language of science and culture. To bring together different generations around projects that create bridges spanning geographic and cultural divides. 18-XXI is based on a conviction; that culture can create social ties and that it has the power to enrich and communicate through encounters with others. 18-XXI’s work is not only limited to theatres; all cultural venues, schools and universities in France, Europe and throughout the world can join.
⋮︎ A EUROPEAN CALL ⋮︎ At a time when nationalism is spreading its evil here and there, the 18-XXI Charter is motivated by a desire to promote a Europe of Youth, a Europe of culture and the arts, as an alternative to economic approaches. Europe cannot exist without its many ties to the world, proud of its plurality and the rich diversity it encompasses. 18-XXI is attempting to push back dogma and borders, by involving the youth of this 21st century, the very youth that is directly concerned by the future of the European territory whose founders wanted to pacify. The 18-XXI projects will put forward other stories, other visions of a Europe that is open, free, inventive and welcoming.
⋮︎ 21ST CENTURY SCHOOL ⋮︎ Education is an essential challenge in the 21st century. Curiosity, the desire to explore and understand must be shared by all, whatever their age. The 18-XXI Charter aims at building bridges between the new generations, the artists and the teachers, to accompany the evolution of schools and universities, and to give priority to artistic, scientific and cultural education. 18-XXI projects with schools will develop children’s appetite for art, scientific knowledge and reading; awaken their curiosity and critical thinking; develop new places in which to express their imagination. 18-XXI’s partner universities and higher education and research institutions are committed to caring about and integrating the plurality of knowledge and experiment generated by their own students through projects that encourage them to imagine, undertake and create.
⋮︎ CULTURE AND ENVIRONNEMENT ⋮︎ During the 20th century, we became aware of the limits of our planet. We now know that we are living in a fabulous place, the Earth, whose already threatened fragile equilibrium we need to preserve. The disappearance of many living species, global warming and natural disasters are already the focus of the concerns of some scientists and artists. 18-XXI aims at including these major 21st-century challenges in its projects.
⋮︎ CURIOSITY AND EXPERIMENT ⋮︎ Experiment, curiosity, the right to make mistakes and start again are how we need to understand and deal with the real world. Discourse and scientific method are necessary for building the 21st century. 18-XXI proposes to connect scientific and artistic practices. In 2015, the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking made a wish for humanity: “Through theoretical physics, I have sought to answer some of the great questions. But there are other challenges, other big questions that must be answered and these will also need a new generation who are interested, engaged and with an understanding of science (…) We are all time travellers, journeying together into the future. But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit. (…) I am very aware of the preciousness of time. Seize the moment. Act now.” The 18-XXI Charter echoes this message.
⋮︎ FROM ONE CENTURY TO ANOTHER: HERITAGE AND TRANSMISSION ⋮︎ The 20th century saw two World Wars, freedom wars from colonial rule and nameless horrors, including the Holocaust. But it also saw successes that live in all our memories and produced some wonderful works: in the technical field to enhance human lives, in the scientific field, to expand our knowledge of the universe, our environments and ourselves, and of course, in the arts. 18-XXI is born of the desire to bring together the generations to look back and take stock of the past century. Its founding principles are memory, transmission and knowledge of our individual and collective history.
⋮︎ BECOME AN AMBASSADOR OF THE 18-XXI CHARTER ⋮︎ Each partner venue, each individual inspired by the principles of this charter, can be an ambassador, whether they are an artist, scientist, writer, lawyer, sports person, etc. Young or old… Being an ambassador for 18-XXI, means symbolically upholding the principles of the Charter and acting concretely in its name. In this way, we will build a growing open network to imagine and test together artistic projects, and create spaces for dialogue, debate and exchange. Each partner is free to undertake an action and accompany its realisation.
⋮︎ 18-XXI Projects ⋮︎ The 18-XXI Charter is a founding text whose principles must find concrete expression in actions. An 18-XXI project may be defined by its creative dimension, by the participation of those born after 2000 and by the bridges it builds between generations, disciplines, places and languages. An 18-XXI action must involve fantasy, poetry, joy and imagination. It should cultivate a spirit of curiosity, openness and goodwill.
⋮︎ PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE ⋮︎ 18-XXI echoes the past, the present and the future; each project should keep a record of its process of research and creation. This documentary evidence is as essential as the public events. It is a way of imagining other projects in the future. The 18-XXI Charter opens a space for dialogue with the youth of the 21st century; its desires, its revolts, its questions, its dreams and its initiatives. Each element in this charter is a proposal that may be completed, amended or modified.
