South Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn is offering 50 young amateur dancers their chance to shine, with 1 minute and 59 seconds on stage to strut their stuff.
Part of the Chantiers d’Europe programme 2019.
From the premise that artistic creation is a powerful form of self-expression, be it collective or individual, choreographer Eun-Me Ahn is offering 50 amateur dancers aged 18 to 20 the chance to create, produce, and perform a dance—solo or group—lasting 1 minute and 59 seconds (including entrance and exit on stage).
Anyone can participate in this space celebrating life and free expression, in any format, formal or improvisational. Nonetheless, in order to fulfil its promise, a performance must address an audience; performance is an encounter, and sometimes a gift. This is no small feat. But this encounter is undoubtedly the most important interaction: at once a moment of utmost difficulty and utmost joy. It is this intense moment that Eun-Me Ahn proposes to create and follow as it develops.

Ahn’s choice of time is anything but random: it corresponds to the average interval that people spend on a single online video before clicking off.
A true piece of performance art, comprising a series of 50 individual sketches, “1’59 – Being 20 in 2020” calls itself the reflection of an era and the snapshot of a generation.

Treating a variety of themes – love, questions of gender, racism, family, and the environment – without prejudice or judgement, the South Korean choreographer prompts us to reflect upon the state of contemporary society.
