Théâtre de la Ville – Paris
50 writers, 50 actors, 50 perspectives on youth
A personal journey through literature from ancient times to the twenty-first century: an event conceived by the Théâtre de la Ville and France Culture, aimed at young people born at the dawn of the new millennium, who turned 18 in 2018 and who will go to the polls in 2019.
The event will comprise 50 extracts pulled from novels, plays, poems, and songs, read by 50 actors and actresses to musical accompaniment, describing youth in all its myriad phases. From the invention of the written word to the present day, countless writers have depicted the dizzying dreams, the highs and the lows, the pleasures and the pains of being young.
The 50 selected readings act as a passport to the future—or, better yet, as a guide, a friend, an ally, a companion on life’s journey. Spanning every era, literary genre, and corner of the globe, these texts help us live our everyday lives, and dream of the future.
Parallel to this, a vast new programme has been launched with texts commissioned from modern-day writers, scientists, and artists, asking them to add their own contributions to this chain of literary readings by writing a “Message to 2068” which looks ahead to 50 years from now.
This inspiring day of readings is open to people of all ages, and invites its audience to experience (or re-experience), through literature, what it feels like to be young.
